These large plates are created from slabs of clay and their shapes are formed by hand or on the wheel. All of them contain sgraffito techniques. Sgraffito is done on a piece of greenware painted with underglaze. The layer of underglaze is scraped off using a tool creating a contrast and line. It’s basically drawing directly into the clay surface. Some artists use it in a carving like way where they scrap deeply into the work. Other artists, like myself, use it in more of a drawing/illustrative style. Soon I will be making a post devoted solely to my techniques and process. Until then you may follow my Instagram
